Biography:
While I have been trained in English literature during my early academic years, my present interests lie in the interdisciplinary exploration of vernacular literatures in South Asia. For my doctoral research, I am interested in studying literary representations and institutional transformations of routinised travel between the colonial metropolis and its hinterland (the mofussil), particularly with a regional focus on 19th and 20th century Bengal. Through the literary and historical figures of colonial commuters and travelers, I aim to explore issues of metropolitan perception, emotions, spatial organization, belonging and otherization, and the transforming sense of speed across space.
