My work focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of premodern South Asia. Recent books include _Cosmopolitanism_ (Duke U. Press 2001, co-edited with Homi Bhabha, Carol Breckenridge, and Dipesh Chakrabarty), and _Literary Cultures in History: Reconstructions from South Asia_(University of California Press, due out at the end of 2002). A monograph, _Cosmopolitan and Vernacular Before Modernity: Culture and Power in South Asia to 1500_, will be published in 2003.

I am currently directing the project "Indian Knowledge-systems on the Eve of Colonialism," sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation. The website is:
