Ngawang Jorden is a Tibetan Buddhist monk/scholar trained at Sa-ngor Monastery (Sikkim, India), Sakya College (Dehradun, India) and Harvard University (USA), where he obtained his doctorate in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy in 2003. Before joining the SALC at the University of Chicago in 2001, he taught for several years at the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies, Harvard University, and has held visiting positions in the International Buddhist Academy (Nepal), Singapore Buddha Sasana Society (Singapore) and University of Vienna (Austria). Dr. Jorden has taught courses on Buddhist Monasticism, various topics on Buddhist philosophy, and he has also worked closely with students on various levels of Tibetan and Buddhist literary and historical texts.


Research Interests:

Translating Buddhist philosophical texts dating from the 10th to the 17th century.

  • Under preparation: Buddha-Nature through the Eyes of Go rams pa Bsod nams seng ge in Fifteenth-Century Tibet.

  • Under preparation: Mus chen thugs rje dpal bzang's commentary on the Abhisamayalamkara and Gorampa's work on Abhidharma titled “The Key to the Exposition of Skandhas, Ayatanas and Dhatus.” These working titles of two books are the translations of two 15th century philosophical texts.
